On the morning of April 9, 2024, two professors from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Russia, Alexey Cheremisin and Sergey Stanchits, delivered guest lectures at the Global Vision Lecture series at China University of Petroleum (CUP). Their presentations were titled "Theoretical and Technological Advances in Improving Oil and Gas Recovery" and "Geomechanics and Hydraulic Fracturing Technology" respectively.

Professor Cheremisin addressed the increasing global energy demand and the urgent need to enhance oil and gas recovery rates. He delved into modern methods and theories for improving oil and gas recovery, highlighting the findings from a series of oil and gas extraction experiments and numerous simulation studies conducted by the Petroleum Science and Engineering Center at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology. He provided a detailed discussion on the thermodynamic HER (Hydrogen Evolution Reaction) method for unconventional reservoirs, as well as cutting-edge methods for physical simulation of EHR (Enhanced Hydrocarbon Recovery).

In his lecture, Professor Stanchits first introduced the development of laboratory hydraulic fracturing technology. He explored the interplay between geomechanical properties, hydraulic fracturing parameters, and the viscosity of the injected fluid through the analysis  of indoor hydraulic fracturing experiments. This research enhances the understanding of efficient development of unconventional oil and gas resources, providing a theoretical foundations and technical support for future practical applications.

During the lecture, the two professors also addressed questions from CUP students on various topics, including CO2 geological sequestration, CO2 fracturing experimental equipment, and noise reduction. They also provided information about the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology.

Founded in 2011, the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) is a joint venture between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States and the Skoltech Foundation.  The new institution dedicated to education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. In 2021, Skoltech ranked 65th in the Nature Index's global ranking of young universities and was among the top 150 in the QS ranking for specific disciplines. Located in the Skolkovo Innovation Center, known as the "Silicon Valley of Russia," in Moscow, the institute boasts 15 research centers and has established research collaborations with over 800 universities worldwide. Skoltech offers 14 majors and currently has 1,162 master's and doctoral students enrolled, 21% of whom are international students from 52 countries.

The keynote speakers at this Global Vision Lecture wereProfessor Alexey Cheremisin, the Deputy Director of the CREI Experimental Center at Skoltech, and Professor Sergey Stanchits, the founder of LabAdvance Micro Oil and Gas Flow Company. Professor Cheremisin possesses over 20 years of research experience in hydraulic fracturing, enhanced oil recovery, multiphase flow, and geomechanics. Professor Sergey Stanchits is an internationally renowned rock mechanics expert and the Director of the Geomechanics Group at Skoltech. He  served as a director and chief scientist at research institutions in the United States, Germany, and Russia, leading interdisciplinary international teams in dynamic petroleum engineering rock mechanics research. With over 44 years of research experience in rock mechanics, fracturing, and acoustic emission fracture monitoring, Professor Stanchits has independently designed and developed innovative AE signal localization and 3D fracture dynamic visualization inversion software. He has been awarded the Guido Bonarelli Award, the American Rock Mechanics Association Award, and the Louis Cagniard Award.
